Bring the original or a permitted YouTube link
Create a free account and add the recording to your episode library. YouTube import is available, but source restrictions and network checks can prevent a download. If an import fails, upload a permitted copy of the original instead. Private videos, playlists and live streams are not supported; CastCuts is not a way to bypass access restrictions.
Choose a short that stands on its own
A long tutorial may contain one answer that works without its introduction. A podcast may contain an explanation worth hearing before the full conversation. Review the automatic English transcript-based suggestions, then check the sentences before and after the cut. You can choose your own start and end times if a suggestion misses the point.
- Keep the explanation that makes a surprising claim accurate.
- For a tutorial, include the action and its visible result within the same clip.
- Leave out references such as ‘as I said earlier’ when the earlier context is essential.
Convert the selected moment to a portrait video
Choose a fixed portrait crop when the subject remains visible throughout the clip, or keep the full frame when a second speaker or diagram matters. Add an opening headline and review captions from the timed transcript. Automatic transcription supports English. Preview the finished render before downloading; selecting a portrait layout does not guarantee that moving subjects stay in frame.
Download, then publish from your own account
CastCuts exports a 9:16 MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. It does not upload the Short to your YouTube channel, add a related-video link or schedule a post. Publish the downloaded file yourself and use the platform’s available controls to describe the clip and connect it to your full video. Free exports carry CastCuts branding; Pro removes it from new renders for $9 USD per month.
Questions before you start
Can I turn a YouTube link into a Short without uploading a file?
Yes, when CastCuts can access the permitted source through its YouTube import. Availability depends on the source and network. If the import is blocked, use your own original file. A successful import is not guaranteed for every public link.
Can I convert an entire long video to vertical?
CastCuts creates individual 1–90 second clips, rather than exporting a whole long episode as one vertical video. Sources can be up to two hours and 512 MiB. Output is 720 × 1280, not 1080p.
Is the YouTube to Shorts converter free?
Free includes branded exports, automatic English transcription and clip suggestions within the displayed account limits. Pro costs $9 USD per month for new exports without CastCuts branding. Both plans retain media for 24 hours.
Try your recording
Both plans: 1–90 second clips, 720 × 1280 MP4, up to 10 episodes, 4 GiB storage and 10 clips per episode. Sources may be up to 512 MiB and two hours. Media expires after 24 hours.
Pro removes CastCuts branding from new renders; it does not raise limits or queue priority. Monthly renewal until canceled; no voluntary refunds except where required by law.
