Make the cut

Cut filler words from podcast clips without changing the meaning

Decide when to keep podcast hesitations, move excerpt boundaries or use an external editor for internal filler-word cuts and silence removal.

Treat filler-word removal as a meaning and audio edit. Move a clip boundary past an unnecessary opening hesitation when the remaining sentence is complete. Keep uncertainty, emphasis and natural breathing when they matter. CastCuts does not delete internal filler words or silence: its clips are continuous excerpts, so detailed jump cuts need an external editor.

Separate verbal clutter from information

Listen to the phrase before deciding that a word is disposable. An isolated 'um' may add no information, while 'I think', 'roughly' and 'in our case' can communicate uncertainty or scope. 'Well' may signal disagreement with the question rather than a meaningless delay. Mark three kinds of material in your own notes: removable hesitation, necessary qualification and conversational rhythm. Do not use a blanket rule that makes a careful speaker sound certain.

Use excerpt boundaries for simple cleanup

When a hesitation occurs before the first useful sentence, try starting after it. When a complete answer is followed by a searching pause before a new topic, try ending at the completed answer. Preserve the beginning and end of each spoken word and allow a natural finish. These changes fit CastCuts' continuous 1–90 second selection. They cannot remove an 'um' from the middle while keeping the words on both sides; no internal silence remover or filler-word deletion feature is implied by moving the two boundaries.

Make internal cuts in an appropriate external workflow

If repeated restarts prevent understanding, return to your source project or use a separate editor that supports internal audio and picture cuts. Listen across every join for clipped syllables, abrupt room tone and a change in cadence. Check the picture as well: removing audio usually changes the apparent motion or creates a visible jump. Keep an untouched master and export one reviewed working video if you plan to upload it to CastCuts afterward. Its new timestamps belong to that edited file, so update your selection notes.

Keep caption cleanup honest about the sound

Editing caption text does not remove any speech from the video. Correct recognition errors against the recording, and choose a consistent transcription style for minor hesitations without rewriting the speaker's position. Do not delete a captioned negative, uncertainty or repeated word that changes emphasis simply to make the sentence look tidy. Review the final MP4 with sound and captions together.

A fictional cleanup decision with two different cases

Illustrative example. The people, recordings and results described here are fictional.

A guest begins 'Um, so, our first workshop had six people.' Starting at 'Our first workshop' keeps the complete statement and needs only a boundary change. Later the guest says 'I think this could work for a larger group.' Removing 'I think' would make the advice more certain than intended. The editor keeps that phrase. A repeated restart inside the next sentence is left intact or handled in the original editing project, rather than claimed as a CastCuts word deletion.

Remove a distraction only when the edited speech preserves both the thought and its level of certainty.

Check before you finish

  • Hesitations are distinguished from conditions and uncertainty.
  • Boundary changes leave complete words and a natural cadence.
  • Internal cuts, if needed, are reviewed in an external editor.
  • Caption changes are not mistaken for changes to the audio.

Practical questions

Does CastCuts automatically remove filler words?

No. CastCuts renders one continuous excerpt. You can select its start and end, but deleting words, pauses or sentences inside that range requires another editor.

Should every 'um' be removed from a podcast clip?

No. A small hesitation may be unobtrusive, and repeated cuts can make speech sound abrupt. Remove material when it helps understanding and preserves the speaker's intended meaning.

Will deleting a word from captions delete its audio?

No. Caption edits change the rendered text. Listen to the video independently and use an external audio/video editing workflow for any internal speech removal.

Use this workflow in CastCuts
