Work through a recording

How to make short clips from a StreamYard recording

Download an authorized StreamYard recording, choose cloud video or prepared local tracks, and check overlays before creating vertical clips.

Obtain a downloadable StreamYard recording with permission, check its complete picture and audio, then upload the prepared video to CastCuts. A finished cloud recording and separate local recordings serve different editing purposes. Choose or assemble the viewing experience you need before clipping; there is no automatic StreamYard sync in this workflow.

Confirm that a downloadable recording exists

StreamYard's current help page says recording downloads require a paid plan and an account Owner or Admin. A guest's ability to watch a broadcast does not give them download access. Ask the authorized account holder for the recording and permission to repurpose it when appropriate. A broadcast appearing in a past-session list does not itself prove that a file was recorded. Check the actual recording library rather than planning an edit around an unavailable file or attempting to bypass account restrictions.

Choose the broadcast view or prepare local recordings

StreamYard documents cloud video downloads and local recordings when those were enabled. For an excerpt that depends on the broadcast's composed view, inspect the cloud video. For a new edit assembled from individual recordings, first combine the necessary picture and audio in a suitable editor. Check that each answer remains audible and synchronized in your final file. CastCuts receives one source video; it does not reconstruct the studio, mix guest files or recover material that was never recorded. Preserve the downloaded originals separately.

Review broadcast graphics before adding clip text

Lower thirds, banners, audience comments and logos recorded into the picture cannot be moved like editable layers. Watch the candidate passage with those elements in mind. A portrait crop might cut a guest's name in half; a new headline might cover a product the host is demonstrating. Compare the complete view and a fixed crop, then place any opening headline and transcript captions where they remain readable. If a private comment appears in the recording, prepare a redacted source externally before uploading it.

Use one broadcast excerpt to validate the handoff

Upload an MP4, MOV or WebM containing video and audio within the displayed limits, normally 512 MiB and two hours. Choose a complete 1–90 second exchange with enough setup to explain any audience comment. Review available English captions, then inspect the downloaded 720 × 1280 MP4 at phone size. Save it before the 24-hour expiry and publish manually.

Fictional worked example: a useful audience question below a guest

Illustrative example. The people, recordings and results described here are fictional.

A producer selects a 42-second live-show answer. An existing lower banner contains the audience question that explains the guest's opening sentence. A tight crop removes half the question. The producer keeps the full view, shortens the new headline and tests captions away from the banner before downloading the approved clip.

Recorded broadcast graphics carry context and occupy real space in the finished clip.

Check before you finish

  • An authorized account holder has provided the actual recording.
  • The source contains a complete mix or has been assembled externally.
  • Banners, comments and names remain appropriate and readable.
  • The downloaded clip is reviewed with every text layer visible.

Practical questions

Can every StreamYard guest download the session?

StreamYard currently limits recording downloads to Owners and Admins on paid plans. Ask the account holder for an authorized file; check the linked official help for current availability.

Can CastCuts remove a banner from the recorded video?

A banner already in the video is part of the picture. Choose a different source composition or prepare a suitable external edit when the banner cannot remain visible.

Does this automatically post clips back to StreamYard?

No. Download the finished MP4 and handle any subsequent upload or publication yourself. There is no native StreamYard transfer or publishing connection.

Use this workflow in CastCuts

Turn a recorded conversation into short excerpts

CastCuts selects continuous 1–90 second excerpts and exports 9:16, 720 × 1280 H.264/AAC MP4 files. Automatic transcription and transcript-based suggestions support English and require review. Free exports include CastCuts branding; Pro removes it from new renders for $9 USD/month, with the same processing and storage limits. Episode media is retained for 24 hours. Keep your originals and download finished clips before expiry. Publishing is manual.
