Choose podcast clips by checking what a stranger can understand and use. Give every candidate the same four checks: a recognizable audience question, a complete answer, a concrete detail and a faithful standalone meaning. Use the scorecard to record your judgment, not to predict views or assign a virality score.
Apply two gates before comparing quality
First ask whether you can publish the passage and whether it represents the speaker fairly. A confidential customer example or a quote that reverses meaning when isolated should stop here, however entertaining it sounds. Then check that a continuous excerpt can deliver the idea within CastCuts' 1–90 second range. A passage that needs a missing diagram, an earlier definition and a later correction is a poor candidate for this particular format. Keep it for another treatment rather than awarding points to compensate for the missing context.
Mark four editorial checks as clear, repairable or absent
Write four columns in your own notes: question, explanation, specificity and independence. Clear means the recording already provides it. Repairable means a nearby continuous start or end can supply it. Absent means you would need to invent information or assemble another passage. Specificity can be a real example, a reason, a contrasting case or an observable action; it does not require a dramatic number. Independence asks whether a new viewer can identify who or what the speaker means. These labels make disagreements visible without pretending that an invented total measures future performance.
Resolve ties using the viewer's question
Compare candidates answering the same question before choosing between unrelated topics. Prefer the one that states its reason plainly and needs less explanation outside the video. If both work, select the stronger demonstration of the episode's subject or keep them for different audiences. An expressive delivery can help, but it should not outweigh an unsupported claim. Save rejected timestamps with a short reason such as 'needs previous definition'. That note prevents the same attractive but incomplete passage from returning during every review.
Recheck the scorecard against the actual export
Create the selected continuous clip, review available English transcript captions and watch the downloaded MP4 without your notes. A crop may hide the example that made specificity clear; a caption error may change the reason. Update the assessment after this review. CastCuts' transcript-based suggestions can supply candidates, but this scorecard is a manual editorial exercise outside the product.
A fictional comparison of two interview moments
Illustrative example. The people, recordings and results described here are fictional.
A guest discusses onboarding a volunteer team. Candidate A says 'Communication is everything' with an energetic delivery, but supplies no action. Candidate B explains asking every new volunteer to repeat their first task in their own words, then describes a misunderstanding this caught. Both pass the permission and accuracy gates. A is absent on specificity; B is clear across all four checks. The editor chooses B and records A as a possible introduction to a longer discussion.
The rubric explains the selection; it does not claim that Candidate B will receive more views.
Check before you finish
- Permission, privacy and the speaker's meaning pass the initial gates.
- The same four checks are recorded for every comparable candidate.
- Repairable context fits inside one continuous excerpt.
- The final MP4 still contains the explanation and concrete detail.
Practical questions
Is a podcast clip scorecard a virality prediction?
No. This scorecard records editorial reasons for choosing a passage. It has no measured relationship to future reach and should not be presented to clients as a predicted performance score.
Should every candidate receive a numerical total?
A total is optional and can hide serious weaknesses. Clear, repairable and absent labels show which part needs work; permission and accuracy remain gates rather than points to trade away.
Does CastCuts run this selection scorecard automatically?
No. Use it in your own review notes. CastCuts provides transcript-based suggestions and manual clip boundaries; you decide which candidates deserve a finished export.
