Work through a recording

Riverside recording to short clips: prepare the right export

Choose a complete Riverside export for podcast clipping, check participant audio and layout, and upload a prepared video to CastCuts.

Download or export a complete Riverside video with the people, picture and sound you want viewers to receive, then upload that file to CastCuts. Separate participant recordings are editing ingredients; a finished combined video is the practical handoff for clipping. This workflow uses a downloaded file rather than a Riverside account integration.

Distinguish participant tracks from a finished video

Riverside documents downloads of high-quality tracks, participant cloud recordings, all-participant cloud recordings and exported edits. Choose the type that matches your next step. If you already have a combined edit with the intended conversation, inspect that export. If you have separate camera or audio files, assemble them in Riverside or another suitable editor first. Keep the original tracks for later changes; a file for one participant should not be mistaken for the complete episode. Available download options depend on the recording and account.

Verify entrances, interruptions and the final answer

Play an early exchange, an interruption in the middle and a late answer in the actual downloaded video. Check that each voice belongs to the visible person and that late arrivals are correctly aligned. Listen for missing remote audio when the host is silent. Record any externally removed countdown or break in your editing notes because it changes the timestamp reference. Fix synchronization in the source project before uploading; transcript corrections change displayed words, not the timing relationship between camera and microphone recordings.

Export the layout that preserves the conversation

A tightly framed single-speaker export gives you different cropping options from a wide two-person composition. Decide whether the selected passage depends on the listener's reaction, an object held up to camera or a shared presentation. Prepare that view in the source export instead of assuming another participant's camera remains available after upload. In CastCuts, compare full-frame padding with a fixed crop over the entire selected passage. A crop does not switch automatically between the separate Riverside tracks.

Make a small handoff test before a batch

Upload an MP4, MOV or WebM containing video and audio within the displayed limits, normally 512 MiB and two hours. Choose a complete 1–90 second answer and review available English captions. Compare the downloaded 720 × 1280 MP4 with the source. Save the master and finished files before the 24-hour expiry, then publish clips manually.

Fictional worked example: two remote guests and one missing reaction

Illustrative example. The people, recordings and results described here are fictional.

A producer downloads the host's camera file to clip a guest's answer. Playback reveals that the guest's voice and demonstration are in separate recordings. The producer returns to the project and exports a combined view. They test a 46-second full-frame excerpt before preparing three more answers from that source.

Choose a finished viewing experience, not simply the first high-quality track available.

Check before you finish

  • The export includes every voice and visual needed for the chosen answer.
  • Early, overlapping and late exchanges remain correctly synchronized.
  • Clip timestamps refer to this particular finished export.
  • The downloaded test and source master are saved independently.

Practical questions

Can I connect my Riverside account to CastCuts?

This guide describes downloading a Riverside recording and uploading a file. CastCuts does not provide native Riverside account syncing or automatic recording retrieval.

Should I upload separate guest tracks?

Prepare a complete video first when the clip needs several tracks. CastCuts works with the picture and audio in the uploaded source; it does not assemble a Riverside multitrack project.

Can I reuse Riverside captions in the clip editor?

Do not assume a downloaded video carries editable timed captions. CastCuts caption editing requires its available timed transcript. Existing captions burned into a video remain pixels in that source.

Use this workflow in CastCuts

Make short clips from a complete interview

CastCuts selects continuous 1–90 second excerpts and exports 9:16, 720 × 1280 H.264/AAC MP4 files. Automatic transcription and transcript-based suggestions support English and require review. Free exports include CastCuts branding; Pro removes it from new renders for $9 USD/month, with the same processing and storage limits. Episode media is retained for 24 hours. Keep your originals and download finished clips before expiry. Publishing is manual.
