A useful podcast clip headline tells a new viewer what the excerpt will explain. Name a specific problem, action or question and check that the spoken clip delivers it. Write the headline after selecting the passage so the promise follows the recording.
Find the promise already inside the answer
Write a plain sentence describing the takeaway, then remove the words that add no meaning. Replace a vague claim such as ‘This changes everything’ with the actual topic. A headline can ask a question, identify a mistake or name a method. It should not turn tentative advice into a guarantee or add a result the guest never mentioned.
Separate the headline from spoken captions
The opening headline introduces the subject; timed captions represent the speech. Avoid filling both with the same long sentence. In CastCuts you add the headline manually and edit captions when a timed transcript is available. Review automatic English transcription before relying on its wording, especially for names, numbers and negatives.
Read the title inside the rendered frame
Choose wording you can read comfortably on a phone while the video plays. Preview line breaks, the speaker’s face and any slide that matters. Shorten the text if it competes with the conversation. Check the platform’s upload preview too, because controls and cropped previews can cover different parts of the image.
Replace vague hooks with specific subjects
Illustrative example. The people, recordings and results described here are fictional.
Fictional rewrites: ‘You need to hear this’ becomes ‘Prepare one follow-up question’. ‘The secret to success’ becomes ‘Why this guest stopped scripting every answer’. ‘Never do this’ becomes ‘When a narrow crop hides the demonstration’. Each rewrite is appropriate only if that is what the selected recording actually discusses.
Compare the headline with the last sentence. The ending should deliver the promise made at the start.
Check before you finish
- The headline names a concrete subject.
- Its certainty matches what the speaker actually says.
- The rendered headline leaves the face and captions readable.
Practical questions
Does CastCuts generate hooks automatically?
This guide provides writing examples. You enter an opening headline manually in the clip editor; it does not promise an automatic hook-writing feature.
Should I use the same text as the post description?
You can repeat the subject, but give the post description a useful extra job: identify the episode, explain the context or provide a relevant next step.
Use this workflow in CastCuts
Edit opening headlines and transcript captions
CastCuts selects continuous 1–90 second excerpts and exports 9:16, 720 × 1280 H.264/AAC MP4 files. Automatic transcription and transcript-based suggestions support English and require review. Free exports include CastCuts branding; Pro removes it from new renders for $9 USD/month, with the same processing and storage limits. Episode media is retained for 24 hours. Keep your originals and download finished clips before expiry. Publishing is manual.
