You do not always need to convert MOV to MP4 before clipping. CastCuts accepts MOV recordings that pass its media validation. If browser playback or file size causes trouble, export a separate H.264/AAC MP4 working copy from your recording editor. Renaming .mov to .mp4 changes the filename, not the media inside it.
Separate the container from the recording’s codecs
MOV and MP4 identify containers; the encoded picture and sound inside determine much of their playback compatibility. Check your editor’s export summary or the file’s media information rather than judging only its suffix. Keep a MOV that works well instead of converting it by habit. If the browser cannot decode your source, check the original in another player before assuming that the recording is damaged.
Export a compatibility copy from the original
When conversion is necessary, select MP4, H.264 video and AAC audio in a suitable external editor. Confirm that audio is enabled and the intended mix is selected. Avoid increasing the source dimensions merely to produce a larger number in the export settings. A small compatibility test is useful before encoding a long interview. CastCuts exports the selected excerpt as a vertical MP4; it is not a full-length format-conversion service.
Verify rotation, color and sound after conversion
Play the new MP4 beside the original at matching moments. Check that a portrait camera recording remains upright, faces retain a sensible appearance and both speakers can be heard. Look at bright windows and darker clothing as well as the center of the frame. If the conversion changes the image unexpectedly, correct the external export settings before uploading. Caption edits cannot fix a missing audio track or an incorrectly prepared picture.
Use the prepared file as a new timestamp reference
If you removed a countdown or trimmed the source externally, earlier notes may point to the wrong passage. Recheck timestamps in the uploaded episode. Select a complete 1–90 second moment, choose a fixed crop or full-frame layout and render a test. Inspect its downloaded audio and image before making more clips. Keep your MOV master and download the results within CastCuts’ 24-hour media window.
A fictional camera master that is too large
Illustrative example. The people, recordings and results described here are fictional.
A host has a 40-minute MOV camera export that exceeds the upload size shown in their library. Instead of renaming the file, they create a smaller MP4 from the original editing project with both microphones mixed in. They compare the first answer and a late answer, then use the MP4’s timestamps to select a 32-second clip. The camera master remains safely stored elsewhere.
Conversion is useful when it solves a specific compatibility or size problem.
Check before you finish
- The reason for conversion is identified before making another copy.
- The exported MP4 contains the intended video and audio tracks.
- Rotation, color and synchronization match the original recording.
- Clip timestamps refer to the prepared file, and the master is preserved.
Practical questions
Does changing the extension convert MOV to MP4?
No. Use an actual export or conversion operation that writes a compatible container and codecs. A renamed file can still fail validation or playback.
Will MP4 make the recording sharper?
Conversion cannot restore detail missing from the source. Additional lossy compression can reduce detail, so compare a test and avoid repeated conversions.
Can I download my entire MOV episode as a converted MP4?
CastCuts renders selected 1–90 second clips as MP4. Prepare a full-length conversion externally when you need one; the original download retains the uploaded source.
Use this workflow in CastCuts
Make short clips from your prepared video
CastCuts selects continuous 1–90 second excerpts and exports 9:16, 720 × 1280 H.264/AAC MP4 files. Automatic transcription and transcript-based suggestions support English and require review. Free exports include CastCuts branding; Pro removes it from new renders for $9 USD/month, with the same processing and storage limits. Episode media is retained for 24 hours. Keep your originals and download finished clips before expiry. Publishing is manual.
