THE CREATOR’S EDITING DESK

How to turn a podcast into Instagram Reels

Repurpose a podcast as an Instagram Reel with a clear takeaway, readable text, careful portrait framing and a review checklist before publishing.

A useful podcast Reel gives someone an idea they can remember, discuss or save. Choose a practical answer or a concise story, then make its subject clear to a viewer discovering the episode for the first time.

Build the Reel around one takeaway

A guest’s three-minute explanation may contain a strong 30-second lesson. Keep the advice and the reason behind it together. If a list needs all five points to make sense, select a different moment instead of cutting it halfway. For a two-person interview, compare a portrait crop with the full-frame layout before choosing.

Make the clip in CastCuts

  1. Bring a recording you can use

Upload an MP4, MOV or WebM with audio, or paste a direct HTTPS video-file link. A YouTube watch link is different: YouTube import is currently blocked on the public service. Keep your original file and respect your guest’s permissions.

  2. Set the start and end

Open the episode’s clip studio and select a 1–90 second passage. Start where the idea becomes clear and end after the payoff. Listen to the sentence before and after the cut so trimming does not change its meaning.

  3. Choose framing and text

Use a fixed portrait crop for a close-up or keep the full frame when two speakers, a slide or a whiteboard provide context. Add an opening headline. Editable on-video captions require an existing timed transcript; automatic transcription is not enabled publicly.

  4. Preview, export and upload

Review the rendered video with sound and once muted. Download the 9:16, 720 × 1280 MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. Upload it to the platform yourself; CastCuts does not publish or schedule posts. Check the platform’s current requirements before posting.

Give the moment a clear opening

Illustrative writing example. Adapt it to what your guest actually says.

Opening headline

A simple way to prepare a better interview

Suggested post caption

A small preparation habit from this episode: write the follow-up question before recording. Save the idea for your next conversation.

The example offers a specific action. Only use this wording if that action is actually discussed in your recording.

Check the Reel and its cover together

Preview faces, the opening headline and any captions on a small screen. Leave space around important text and review the cover in Instagram’s own preview because display crops vary by surface. Write a short description that identifies the episode’s topic and guest where appropriate. Add a useful reason to watch the full conversation, rather than repeating the headline several times.

Check before you publish

  • The clip delivers the takeaway promised by its cover.
  • Names and specialist terms in existing captions are corrected.
  • The cover remains understandable when its preview is cropped.

Practical questions

Will the editor automatically find a viral moment?

Choose your own moment in the public editor. Automatic clip suggestions and free English transcription remain local previews. A useful hook, clear context and careful editing can improve a clip, but views and virality are not guaranteed.

Are captions the same as a post description?

No. On-video captions represent speech and need accurate timing. The post caption is the text you write when uploading to a social platform. CastCuts lets you edit existing timed captions; the sample post copy here is an editorial example.
