Finish the OBS recording, prepare a supported video file with the complete audio mix, then upload it to CastCuts. If your recording is MKV, OBS provides a remux option for creating an MP4. Check the actual scene and sound before selecting a short passage; CastCuts receives your exported file through an ordinary upload.
Finish the recording and locate the real source
Stop recording in OBS and play the saved file before moving it. The OBS recording guide documents the recording path, format settings and a built-in remux workflow. Its recommended MKV recording format is not an accepted CastCuts source container, so prepare an MP4 copy when needed. Remuxing changes the container; it does not remove a starting-soon scene, sharpen a small webcam or mix separate microphones. Keep the original recording while you inspect the copy.
Check the audio mix intended for the audience
An OBS project can use several recording audio tracks. Verify the actual file you will upload rather than relying on moving meters during the session. Listen to an exchange where both people speak, a quiet answer and any section with music. If the voices are separated across tracks, prepare one final audience mix in an external editor. Do not assume the upload will assemble isolated tracks or choose the mix you intended. Remove unwanted desktop sounds before the handoff.
Select passages whose recorded scene can survive a crop
Review the scene visible during each candidate answer. A stream overlay, chat panel or wide game capture might leave the speaker too small for a portrait crop. Compare keeping the complete composition with cropping to a fixed area. A fixed crop stays where you place it, so test a moment when the speaker leans or points. If an essential diagram sits beside the face, preserve both with full-frame padding or choose a different passage. OBS scene elements already burned into the recording remain part of the image.
Upload a working file and inspect the downloaded result
Check that the MP4, MOV or WebM includes video and audio and fits the displayed limits, normally 512 MiB and two hours. After validation, select a complete 1–90 second passage and review available English captions. Play the downloaded 720 × 1280 MP4 before batching. Save exports within the 24-hour media window and publish them manually.
Fictional worked example: a live interview with an OBS overlay
Illustrative example. The people, recordings and results described here are fictional.
A host records an MKV discussion with a title strip and two camera windows. After remuxing, they discover the first playback track contains only the host, so they prepare a complete mix externally. A 34-second answer includes the guest pointing to the host; they preserve the two-person scene and test the downloaded result.
Treat container, audio mix and scene composition as three separate checks.
Check before you finish
- The saved OBS recording is complete and the original is preserved.
- The upload copy contains the intended combined audio mix.
- Recorded overlays and speaker movement work in the chosen framing.
- A downloaded test plays correctly before the remaining clips are made.
Practical questions
Can I upload an OBS MKV directly to CastCuts?
CastCuts accepts MP4, MOV and WebM. Use the OBS remux workflow or an appropriate external export to prepare a supported file; changing the filename extension is insufficient.
Does CastCuts connect to OBS or its replay buffer?
No native OBS connection is provided. Save the recording or replay-buffer file on your device, check it, and upload a compatible video through the episode library.
Will remuxing make a large OBS recording smaller?
Do not depend on that. When the file exceeds the upload ceiling, prepare a smaller working export or an intact source segment externally while preserving your recording master.
Use this workflow in CastCuts
Choose a vertical layout for your recording
CastCuts selects continuous 1–90 second excerpts and exports 9:16, 720 × 1280 H.264/AAC MP4 files. Automatic transcription and transcript-based suggestions support English and require review. Free exports include CastCuts branding; Pro removes it from new renders for $9 USD/month, with the same processing and storage limits. Episode media is retained for 24 hours. Keep your originals and download finished clips before expiry. Publishing is manual.
