# How to edit podcast Q&A clips

> Decide when a podcast clip needs the interviewer’s question. Preserve the answer’s subject, framing and qualifications in a short excerpt.

By CastCuts · Updated 2026-10-22

Keep the interviewer’s question when the answer would otherwise be unclear or change meaning. Start directly with the answer when it already names the subject and includes the necessary conditions. Judge the exchange as a new viewer who has not heard the episode.

## Test the answer without its question

Listen to the first sentence on its own. ‘Usually, yes’ is not a standalone answer. An answer that begins ‘For a two-person interview, I keep the full frame’ gives more context. Check whether the question defines a special case, asks about an exception or contrasts two options. Those details may need to stay even when the answer sounds complete.

## Choose the shortest complete exchange

Select the useful question and its answer as one continuous passage. Avoid a long introduction to the guest unless the answer depends on it. CastCuts does not splice a question from one point into an answer from another. If the exchange exceeds the 90-second editor limit, look for a more focused answer instead of cutting off the conclusion.

## Preview both speakers and their words

A fixed portrait crop may show the answerer while hiding the person asking the question. Full-frame layout can preserve both people, with smaller faces inside the vertical canvas. Check camera changes throughout the excerpt. Review the transcript for the question as well as the answer, and avoid adding speaker labels that the source does not support.

## An answer that needs the question

Illustrative example. The people, recordings and results described here are fictional.

Fictional exchange: ‘Would you use that crop when the guest points at a diagram?’ ‘No, I would keep the whole frame.’ Starting at ‘No’ leaves the viewer guessing. Keep the question, or choose another answer where the guest explicitly explains the framing decision. A headline can introduce the subject but should not replace essential spoken context.

Use the question to preserve meaning, not merely to fill the opening.

## Check before you finish

- The viewer can tell what question is being answered.

- The answer includes its qualification and conclusion.

- Framing and captions remain clear across the speaker change.

## Practical questions

### Can I replace a long question with a headline?

A headline can introduce the topic. First check whether the spoken answer still communicates the question’s conditions. If those conditions are essential, retain them in the excerpt or select another answer.

### Does CastCuts automatically switch crops between speakers?

General automatic speaker tracking and split-screen editing are not available. Review a fixed crop or use full-frame layout when both speakers matter.
