# Podcast caption line breaks: make wrapped phrases easier to read

> Review automatic caption wrapping, preserve meaningful phrases and understand why manual caption newlines are not preserved in CastCuts exports.

Good podcast caption wrapping keeps a short, understandable phrase visible without hiding the subject. Review the real rendered caption at phone size and correct transcription errors before judging its layout. CastCuts wraps caption text automatically and sanitizes manual caption newlines into spaces; use an external subtitle editor if exact line-break placement is essential.

## Judge phrases rather than making lines equally long

Read the caption as part of the spoken sentence. A useful phrase keeps a person's full name, a number with its unit, or a negative with the words it changes easy to understand. Two visually balanced lines can still be awkward if the reader has to wait for the next cue to discover 'not'. Check the preceding and following captions as well as the current one.

## Understand automatic wrapping before adding returns

CastCuts generates timed caption phrases from a transcript and lets you correct their wording. The renderer sanitizes line breaks in caption text into spaces, then wraps ordinary text automatically using the available width and font. Pressing Return therefore does not give you a preserved manual subtitle line break. If your deliverable demands an exact two-line layout or a specific break after every phrase, prepare that subtitle treatment in another suitable editor.

## Fix the cause of an awkward caption before changing the words

First compare the text with the recording. An accidentally joined name or a duplicated word can create a wrapping problem that is really a transcription error. Next review the selected caption size and its available space alongside the face, headline and demonstration. A larger preset can improve legibility while producing more wrapping, so inspect the trade in the actual export. Do not replace accurate speech with a shorter invented summary solely to force a line to fit. Keep proper spelling and necessary punctuation when making corrections.

## Review difficult phrases in a downloaded test clip

Choose a passage with a long name, a number and a short negative statement. Render it, download the MP4 and watch on a small display at ordinary playback speed. Pause only after checking whether the words are readable while moving. Look for a caption that covers an object being explained or creates an isolated word that is hard to connect to the previous line. When automatic wrapping cannot meet an exact delivery requirement, keep the source and use an external workflow instead of promising unsupported line-break controls.

## A fictional number-and-unit caption check

Illustrative example. The people, recordings and results described here are fictional.

The speaker says 'We leave twenty minutes for questions.' The transcript incorrectly reads 'We leave twenty minute four questions', which looks crowded and means something different. The editor corrects the wording against the audio, chooses a readable caption preset and inspects the automatic wrap. Typing a newline after 'twenty' would not lock that break in the CastCuts export. A client who requires an exact break before 'for questions' receives a separate external subtitle treatment.

Correct the transcript and inspect the rendered wrap; do not assume a typed return is an export control.

## Check before you finish

- Caption wording is checked against the spoken source first.

- Names, negatives and numbers remain understandable across the sequence.

- The downloaded MP4 is reviewed at a realistic small display size.

- Exact manual line-break requirements use an external subtitle workflow.

## Practical questions

### Can I force caption line breaks in CastCuts?

Manual newlines in caption text are sanitized into spaces. Captions wrap automatically. Headline line-break settings are separate and do not provide manual subtitle wrapping.

### Should every podcast caption use two lines?

No. Let accurate wording, available space and readable size guide the result. A short phrase may need one line; an exact line-count delivery requirement needs an editor with those subtitle controls.

### Can I shorten captions by paraphrasing the guest?

Correct transcription errors without silently changing the guest's claim. If you need a concise summary, put it in clearly separate headline or post text rather than presenting it as the spoken caption.
