# iPhone podcast video to clips: record and prepare your source

> Prepare iPhone podcast footage for short clips with stable framing, a real microphone test, an original transfer and a checked portrait export.

By CastCuts · Updated 2026-10-26

Record stable video with clear sound, transfer a complete copy of the iPhone recording and upload a supported file to CastCuts. Plan the composition for the people and objects each answer needs. Test the recording and exported result before a long session.

## Set the phone for a conversation that stays in frame

Support the iPhone securely and place the lens near the speaker's eye level. Check the composition from the position in which the guest will actually speak, including a natural lean and hand gesture. Use horizontal framing when the full interview needs two people side by side; leave a useful central area if some excerpts will use a portrait crop. Keep the background simple and look for bright windows that make a face hard to see. Record a short speaking test instead of judging only a silent camera preview.

## Choose settings for the session and its working file

Apple documents recording formats and frame-rate choices that vary by iPhone model, and notes that higher resolutions and faster frame rates make larger files. Check the options on your own device and make a representative test. For a seated conversation, evaluate face detail, motion and file size together rather than picking the largest setting automatically. CastCuts' rendered clip is 720 × 1280; a large source setting does not change that output resolution.

## Transfer the source and verify what arrived

Use a transfer method that gives you the actual video file, then play the saved copy before uploading. A messaging-app preview or short shared extract might differ from the camera master. Check duration, orientation, both speakers' sound and an answer near the end. MOV is supported alongside MP4 and WebM, provided the file passes validation. If playback, file size or color looks wrong, prepare an external compatibility copy from the original and compare it at matching moments. Renaming an extension does not convert the recording.

## Check the first clip as a complete phone viewing experience

Check the source contains picture and sound within the displayed limits, normally 512 MiB and two hours. Select a complete 1–90 second answer and compare framing. Review available English captions, keeping text clear of faces and demonstrations. Play the downloaded 720 × 1280 MP4 with headphones. Save the master and exports before the 24-hour expiry, then publish manually.

## Fictional worked example: a kitchen-table interview

Illustrative example. The people, recordings and results described here are fictional.

A creator records two people at a table with an iPhone. A test reveals distant sound and hands disappearing from a tight portrait frame. They move the microphone closer and film horizontally. Later, a 29-second solo answer works as a fixed crop; an object demonstration needs the complete frame.

A short realistic test exposes composition and audio problems before the full interview.

## Check before you finish

- The phone is stable and natural movement stays inside the useful composition.

- A recorded speaking test confirms the intended microphone and both voices.

- The transferred file preserves duration, orientation and expected picture quality.

- The downloaded clip is checked and the original remains independently saved.

## Practical questions

### Must iPhone footage be converted from MOV to MP4?

Not automatically. CastCuts accepts MOV files that pass validation. Prepare a separate MP4 compatibility copy when a specific playback or size problem requires it, and preserve the original.

### Should I always film the whole podcast vertically?

Choose the composition for the recording's main purpose. A two-person interview may need a horizontal master; a portrait crop must still preserve whichever people or objects explain the selected moment.

### Will captions fix distant or distorted iPhone audio?

Captions can display reviewed speech, but they do not repair the recorded sound. Correct microphone placement and test it before the session rather than relying on transcription to rescue an unclear source.

## Use this workflow in CastCuts

[Frame phone-recorded interviews for vertical clips](https://castcuts.co/horizontal-video-to-vertical)

CastCuts selects continuous 1–90 second excerpts and exports 9:16, 720 × 1280 H.264/AAC MP4 files. Automatic transcription and transcript-based suggestions support English and require review. Free exports include CastCuts branding; Pro removes it from new renders for $9 USD/month, with the same processing and storage limits. Episode media is retained for 24 hours. Keep your originals and download finished clips before expiry. Publishing is manual.
