# How long should podcast clips be?

> Choose podcast clip length from the idea, explanation and payoff. Compare illustrative short answers, practical lessons and story excerpts.

A podcast clip should be long enough to deliver one complete thought and short enough to avoid unrelated setup. Start with the answer, keep the explanation it needs and stop after the payoff. There is no single duration that guarantees a better result for every topic or audience.

## Choose a structure before a duration

A direct answer can need less time than a story with a turning point. Identify the smallest complete unit: question and answer, claim and reason, or setup and consequence. Make a rough selection around that unit. CastCuts supports 1–90 second clips; this is the editor’s range, not a statement of any social platform’s maximum duration.

## Shorten setup without removing the reason

Listen for repeated introductions, greetings and a sentence that simply restates what follows. Move the start later when the subject remains clear. Keep a condition such as ‘for a small team’ if it limits the advice. If fitting the idea into the editor would remove essential context, choose another passage rather than forcing a misleading cut.

## Judge the ending as carefully as the opening

Play the clip without looking at the rest of the episode. Does the last sentence finish the answer, or does it introduce a point you have cut off? Leave room for the last word to finish naturally. Then check the downloaded video in the destination platform’s preview; its current posting requirements and your editorial choice are separate checks.

## Three possible rough-cut lengths

Illustrative example. The people, recordings and results described here are fictional.

In a fictional planning session, an 18-second excerpt gives one answer and its reason; a 38-second excerpt explains an action with a small example; a 65-second excerpt tells a setup, turning point and outcome. These are illustrative editing choices, not recommended targets or measured performance benchmarks.

Keep the shortest version that still delivers the promised explanation.

## Check before you finish

- The opening identifies the subject without the full episode.

- Necessary conditions and the payoff remain in the cut.

- The end finishes the thought within the editor’s 1–90 second range.

## Practical questions

### Are shorter podcast clips always better?

No. Removing an explanation can make a short clip confusing. Compare complete versions and use your own publishing results to inform the next edit.

### Should every clip from an episode have the same length?

No. A short answer and a story do different jobs. Choose their boundaries independently and review each result.
